I'm currently the mother of a 15-week-old 4-inch-long fetus. However, it feels a bit strange to be a recipient of "Happy Mother's Day" at this point - not because I don't think I'm a mother or that this fetus is a human baby, but because I don't feel like I deserve it yet. I'm not corralling kids left and right like so many other "super moms" around me. I'm not doing parenting things yet, like disciplining or juggling activities or schooling. I'm carrying a baby in my belly, but it doesn't really feel like I'm a mom yet. However, today we celebrated Pre-Mother's Day. And it was awesome. After church, we had a nice Mother's Day luncheon and we were able to visit a lot with our Hope Chapel North Shore o'hana. Then we had planned on going on a hike to La Perusse past Makena after the luncheon, but we were rained out (the whole island has been covered in rain for the last 24 hours). So my husband took me to Jamba Juice to get a delicious smoothie (well, we were kind of forced to stop because our car was overheating, but we made the best of it), and then we decided to go see a matinee showing of Iron Man 3 (we are huge Marvel nerds, and also WAY prefer matinees to late night movies). The movie was awesome by the way - I wondered how it would hold up to the first two. However, it always leaves us with a feeling of inadequacy with our daily lives, haha. If only we had super powers...or Stark technology. After the movie, we got a pizza to go, not wanting to cook anything at the house, then came home to the family we're staying with and played Dutch Blitz (our new favorite card game).
As I look around me at so many amazing mothers and observe their strength and sacrifice, I'm a little intimidated by what's to come in my own life. However, I feel honored that I'm preparing to join these ranks of motherhood. There's a lot of unknown in the world ahead, but I guess that's part of the journey. :) Happy Mother's Day to all of you mothers out there. May you be blessed for all you've done and continue to do in your children's lives.
